Sit down with GoTrend to get all the deets about the girl who’s making Joburg her playground!
GoTrendSA: So, Shajar! tell us more about yourself?
Shajar Khan: I am 23 years of age and Miss International 2013/ 2014. Apart from partaking in pageantry, and modelling since the age of 14, I am a full time student at the University of Johannesburg where I completed psychology in 2012. I am currently in my 3rd year of studying HR. I have ventured into the corporate world at a very young age, and I have been given the opportunity to work as a forensic investigator for George Fivaz risk management among many other companies Including media 24. I have been recently appointed as a recruitment consultant, and I am the Co – owner of Paper Dolls Modelling and Finishing School: (www.paperdollsmodelling.co.za)
GoTrendSA: Winning Miss International must of been big for you, tell us a little more about it?
Shajar Khan: Been crowned Miss International South Africa was, and still is a huge honour for me, having had the opportunity to represent South Africa in Chicago last year was a dream come true for me. I have always strived for greatness and wanted to be a national title holder and a representative on an international scale. Throughout my reign I had great sponsors and support, I ran various charity drives and also focused on my platform which was promoting literacy. Being able to make a difference and be a role model has left an imprint on my heart.
GoTrendSA: What can you say was your biggest learning experience from the Miss International pageant?
Shajar Khan: Wow choosing one is very difficult as everyday thought me something new. I have always appreciated my family however after the pageant I had new sense of appreciation and respect for them. My international sisters thought me about sharing, caring and understanding, which I may add is not too popular in the industry, the fact that my flight departing from new York to Chicago was delayed for over 2 days; thought me patience, perseverance, and the strength of prayer.
It’s lessons and feelings that I had known and had, however it was reinforced – most of all the biggest learning experience for me was not giving up, staying strong and overcoming all adversities.
GoTrendSA: We have to say you’re a style icon! What do you look for when picking out clothing and outfits?
Shajar Khan: Thank you, that’s flattering! I think that being yourself is so important, being versatile, and open to trying new looks. Staying in your comfort zone may become monotonous. It’s always essential to look red carpet ready at all times so making sure that your clothing is well tailored and fitted. Choosing colours that are well suited to your skin tone. Fashion fades and style remains forever – so I try my best to keep it stylish and timeless.
GoTrendSA: You’re always looking glamorous, and staying in the public eye all the time means you have to look good. What are some of your beauty routines, tips and hints you do to stay fabulous?
Shajar Khan: Even though I don’t have much time in my day, I try to make working out and hitting the gym a priority, eating clean and staying healthy which always reflects on the outside – I always try to keep my skin looking healthy by drinking lots of water and using a good skin care range – my sponsors always ensure that I’m red carpet ready, I can safely say that it does take an army, and I’m so glad that I have that army behind me. My routine usually starts with a trip to DR Reza Mia – aesthetic surgeon who keeps my skin glowing, and Ralo Cosmetics, as well as a fabulous designer…
GoTrendSA: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Shajar Khan: Been a full time student, having a full time job and running a company doesn’t leave me with much spare time, however I do believe that it’s important to have a balanced life so I work hard and play hard! (Laughs!)
I would say working out, socialising, and retail therapy. I am family orientated so most of my spare time is spent with family and close friends.
GoTrendSA: What advice would you give to the girls of today?
Shajar Khan: There are so many issues that the youth of today are faced with, not only females. My advice would be to educate yourself to the best of your ability, It’s an asset which no one can take away from you. Stay classy and always have self respect. Don’t let peer pressure and factors around you influence you negatively. Remember that you have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé – use it wisely.
GoTrendSA: What other projects are you currently involved with?
Shajar Khan: Charity drives and mentorship classes, The co – owner of Paper dolls, who is also my sister; Mamtaz and I are members of mara mentor – we coach and mentor online. I am also a celebrity writer for ZAlebs.
GoTrendSA: What do you hope to get involved with in the future?
Shajar Khan: I would love to enter Miss SA and possibly go into fitness modeling at a later stage, with regard to education and work; I would like to complete my honours in HR, and achieve maximum growth within the corporate sector
