When it comes to smartphones, most of us want the usual mix: a bright screen, decent camera, good battery life and enough performance to get through a day without breaking a sweat. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been living with the Honor X9d, and if there’s one way to sum it up, it’s this: a phone that doesn’t just do the basics well, it seriously over-achieves in the areas that matter most for real-world use.

Let’s unpack why this mid-range Android device has quickly become one of my favourite daily drivers.

Design and Durability: It’s REALLY built for Real Life

The X9d isn’t trying to be a delicate piece of art where you’re constantly worrying about smudges and cracks. Instead, it feels purposeful and robust in hand. Honor’s design emphasises durability with certified drop and water resistance that you don’t usually see in this segment. The phone reportedly survives drops from up to 2.5 m and carries one of the highest water/dust certifications available.

Whether you’re clumsy like me, or work around tools and outdoor environments, there’s something comforting about knowing a little splash or a slip won’t immediately spell disaster. In everyday use, that rugged feel translates into real peace of mind — I’ve dropped it a couple of times already and the screen and frame have held up impressively.

Display: Bright, Colourful and Easy on the Eyes

One of the first things you notice about the X9d is its big display. The 6.79-inch OLED panel strikes a great balance between size and usability, and it’s vivid with rich colours and strong contrast. Whether you’re scrolling through social feeds, watching videos or reading articles, the visuals feel pleasing and smooth thanks to a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Outdoors, the display gets bright enough to remain visible even in sunlight, which is a genuine plus for anyone who uses their phone out and about. The combination of high brightness and excellent colour reproduction makes everyday tasks feel premium.

Performance: Solid for Daily Use

Under the hood, the phone runs on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 platform, paired with ample RAM depending on the configuration (12 GB in my unit). In regular daily use — browsing, chats, social media, streaming, even some light editing — everything remains snappy and responsive.

It’s not a powerhouse for heavy gaming. If graphics-intensive 3D titles dominate your day, you might notice slight limitations. But for most of us who use our phones to message, multitask, watch content and run a handful of background apps, the performance feels just right.

Camera: Impressive Everyday Shooter

The camera setup centres on a 108 MP main sensor with optical image stabilisation, and a 5MP Wide camera. It’s capable of capturing detailed, vibrant shots that are great for social media. Video recording up to 4K also gives you flexibility when creating content, and the AI features onboard help enhance shots without needing post-editing.

For those selfie fanatics, it features a 16MP front-facing camera for everyday shooting and with great pre-installed features like beauty mode, you’re always getting great selfies on the go.

Battery Life That Lasts and Lasts

Here’s where the X9d really shines. Its 8300 mAh silicon-carbon battery is among the largest you’ll find in contemporary phones, and in normal use it easily lasts two full days, often pushing into three with modest usage.

On a couple of days, I tracked screen-on time exceeding 15–18 hours with battery left over — excellent numbers considering how often we tap, refresh and stream throughout a typical day. And when you do need to juice up, 66 W wired charging gets you back in action quickly.

If long battery life is a priority — for travel, heavy daily use or just peace of mind — this phone delivers in a way that most competitors don’t.

Software and Daily Experience

Running Android with Honor’s MagicOS, the experience is smooth and intuitive. There are plenty of customisation options and practical tools built in, and connectivity (Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, etc.) is solid. You’ll have access to the Google Play Store and all your favourite apps with no issues.

There’s the occasional quirk in navigation animations or some small interface settings, but nothing that seriously hampers overall enjoyment.

Final Thoughts: A Mid-Range Contender With Real Strengths

After two weeks with the Honor X9d, the real takeaway is this: it’s a well-rounded smartphone that excels where it matters most in daily life. Whether it’s the enduring battery, the robust build, the beautiful display or the reliable performance, it’s a phone you can depend on.

If you want a daily driver that doesn’t need pampering, delivers strong all-day (and multiple-day) use and doesn’t break the bank, the Honor X9d deserves serious consideration.
