In a coup for South African fashion former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland wowed Hollywood’s fashionistas in a black beaded Gert-Johan Coetzee dress on Tuesday night. “Kelly Rowland was obviously dressed to impress because THAT’s what we call a LBD” gushed one style writer.

Rowland attended the 40th anniversary of the Ms Foundation for Women in honour of its founder, the feminist icon Gloria Steinem, in Beverly Hills, California. Afterwards she had dinner with friends at the celebrity eatery Mr Chow.
Fashion and celebrity websites were aflutter over the star’s gorgeous backless dress, with headlines such as “Rowland stuns in Beverly Hills”, “Kelly Rowland… leads the fashion pack” and “Kelly Rowland brings the WOW factor in dazzling LBD”.
The little number was described as “the most elegant of little black dresses we’ve seen on Kelly in quite some time”.
Coetzee met the singer in September when she was in South Africa to perform at a private gig in Johannesburg. “I was asked to design something special for her and because she is looking so fit, I decided on a short, tight gown embellished with black beads in different sizes. I was thrilled that she liked it.”
Not as thrilled as when the star credited him on Instagram on Tuesday. “As a designer I get so much satisfaction if any woman wearing GJC gets compliments, so to see that a megastar in one of my dresses is called the best dressed at a Hollywood event, is like champagne straight into my veins!”
Will he consider making a version of the winning dress for local fashionistas with deep pockets? The designer just laughs when he is asked this question. “I have too many ideas… I don’t ever make exactly the same dress twice!”
